Posted on by The 4.3.0 release of Apple Compressor was notable for the number of bugs it contained, including slow compression speeds, inability to burn DVDs and non-functioning watermarking. I am disappointed in the latest version 4.3.2 of Compressor because of my need to produce high-quality DVD and Blu-ray versions.

I have had to resort to iDVD for the purposes of making a DVD and am yet to find a way to produce a Blu-ray version. I am using an early 2013 MacBook Pro and a Pioneer BDR-XD05TB which purports to be Mac friendly.

• If I just buy the newest Compressor 4.x as a standalone app, does it allow me to grab mxf files and convert (rewrap) to MOV or ProRes? I have a client that doesn't have MXF viewer ability, and always previews the shots with MOV on his mac.

Of course I am also running FCP X 10.3.4 and Sierra. However, as I am not familaiar with Compressor I am wondering if the problems are due to that rather than shortcomings with the applications? Compressor is actually still part of my BluRay workflow. It still has settings for creating a great.264 video file and AC3 audio file, either stereo or surround, that I then pull into Encore (which you can still download as part of Adobe Creative Cloud) for the BluRay authoring to disc image.

One odd behavior I’ve noticed in the latest version of Compressor is when I set custom bit rates for H264 compressions, the results don’t match at all. For example I set it to 20000kpbs and it rendered out a monster file that was actually 77000kbps. Can’t figure out why it’s doing that. I’m guessing it’s a bug, because I”m using same settings as before and identical workflow, machine, drives, everything. Only diff is new Compressor version.

You can find this in the Mac app store. Just type in compressor. This is an app available for sale, so you can purchase it if you'd like. When ready, simply click open to launch it. What you'll want to do is choose current and then simply add a file. This will bring up navigation. You can now navigate to the file that you want to optimize.

Let's choose that eagle movie. Now you can choose what's going to happen with it.

You'll notice that there are several presets built in, including video sharing services. This allows you to target different sizes. For example, perhaps I want to size that for HD at 720. You can also access custom if you want to build your own and save presets in here for use. I'll choose okay and it adds it. Additionally, if I needed more types of files, I could do that.
